Huawei Nova Y90 Review: Features, Specs, and Price in Nigeria

All about the new Huawei Nova Y90

The Huawei Nova Y90 is a great smartphone that is worthy to represent the company’s mid-range category. And not only that, the smartphone is affordable as well, so that’s enough reason to get the phone if you’re a budget buyer. Meanwhile, there’re many things you should know about this new phone, and we’ve gathered them all in this review.

The Huawei Nova Y90 is the latest addition to the company’s line of mid-range phones. Huawei is aiming to expand its affordable mid-tier line with the release of this phone which is the direct successor to the Huawei Nova Y70 of last year. While there’re upgrades on the Huawei Nova Y90, the features and specs are almost on the same level as its predecessor.

First of all, we’re delighted to see the big 6.7-inch screen that boasts a resolution of 1080 x 2388 pixels and a 90Hz refresh rate. The performance is handled by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 680 chipset which is a mid-range processor. Unfortunately, the likes of a 5G network connectivity and AMOLED display are some of the things you’ll miss if you’re planning to buy this phone.

Well, those are things you can comfortably live without, so we’re pretty sure you won’t see it as an issue. Nevertheless, there’re many 5G-capable mid-range phones out there in the market, speaking of the Motorola Moto G62 5G and the Oppo A57 5G, with the first having a higher refresh rate of 120Hz.

Therefore, we expected the Huawei Nova Y90 to come up with much better specs than these two phones, but what it has offered still goes well with the price.

Design

Design

The design of the Huawei Nova Y90 reminds us of the company’s famous “Mate” series. You’ll find the phone very familiar when you see the camera module which looks like that of the Mate 40 and the HONOR’s Magic3 series smartphones. We’re speaking of the circular camera module on the Huawei Nova Y90 which houses a triple camera setup and a LED flash.

Huawei has designed the camera module to pop up a little from the rear surface, though the phone has a slim body. This makes the Huawei Nova Y90 not to lay flat when placed on a table, so the included case in the box will be very useful, as it helps to prevent the large camera bump from attracting scratches.

That’s only for the camera module because the rear is free from scratches, thanks to the mate polycarbonate back panel that also offers some glitter-like finish without feeling glossy. The Huawei Nova Y90 has its fingerprint scanner integrated into the power button on the right edge, alongside the volume rocker.

The bottom features a microphone, USB Type-C port, a loudspeaker, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. Huawei didn’t include a micro SD card slot, so you won’t have an option to expand the phone’s storage.

Display

Display

Though the Huawei Nova Y90 is a mid-range phone, it features almost the same display as some flagship phones. Starting with the slim top and side bezels which gave the huge 6.7-inch screen a screen-to-body ratio of 89.1%. Fortunately, the IPS LCD comes with a 90Hz of refresh rate, so the absence of an AMOLED panel won’t hurt much.

The display of the Huawei Nova Y90 has nothing special in brightness. Though color production is great as well as sharpness, thanks to the higher resolution of 1080 x 2388 pixels. However, the screen is most visible while you’re indoors but not so on high noon.

Camera

Camera

On the part of the camera, the Huawei Nova Y90 could just be showing off with its elegant camera module. Though it features a triple camera setup where there’s a 50MP sensor as the main shooter, the two auxiliary sensors are rather useless because there’s absolutely not much to expect from a 2MP sensor.

Well, that’s still acceptable given the budget configuration of the phone. Actually, the 50MP main shooter makes the camera performance of the Huawei Nova Y90 a solid one. With the main camera, the phone captures detailed images with decent colors, brightness, contrast, and dynamic range.

While in low-light scenarios, you’ll struggle to capture enough detailed images just like other budget phones, so the Huawei Nova Y90 shouldn’t be different. But once you’re capturing in good light conditions, photos will look natural and good enough to share on social media.

The lack of OIS or EIS will make video outputs to be a bit shaky, but the Huawei Nova Y90 still delivers some decent shots when you shoot videos with it. The 8MP selfie camera performs impressively whether you’re taking selfies or recording videos. The portrait mode delivers some beautiful background blurs while taking selfies.

Performance, Storage, and Software

Performance, Storage, and Software

Performance-wise, the Huawei Nova Y90 comes with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 680 chipset coupled with Adreno 610 GPU for graphics. Looking at this setup, we’re convinced that the Nova Y90 will have a solid performance. The smartphone works perfectly for everyday use where you browse the internet, play games, and watch movies.

Unsurprisingly, heavy multitasking and graphics-demanding games will often slow down the phone’s performance. You’ll hardly find a budget-friendly smartphone that can handle heavy tasks without showing signs of lag in performance. Though the cheaper Oppo A57 5G can play some games like Genshin Impact and Asphalt Nitro perfectly, they equally work on this phone but that’s on a lower graphics setting.

The Huawei Nova Y90 has 8GB of RAM and 128GB of in-built storage where you’ll get 110GB of storage for downloaded apps and media files. There’s no slot for the insertion of a micro SD card, meaning that this phone’s storage is not expandable. Meanwhile, the Huawei Nova Y90 comes with other storage variant of 6GB /128GB.

The Huawei Nova Y90 ships the Android 12-based EMUI 12. This isn’t fully an Android smartphone, so it’s limited to some Google services. Nevertheless, the phone’s user interface is very customizable and easy to navigate. You’ll also have an access to some useful apps through the phone’s “App Gallery”.

Battery Capacity and Charging

Battery Capacity and Charging

A 5000mAh is the standard battery capacity for every smartphone. However, the Huawei Nova Y90 has the same 5000mAh battery which can last for more than two days if you use the phone moderately. From an empty battery, the phone only takes an hour or less to charge, thanks to the 40W supercharger.
