Oppo Reno 8
Design

Design

Oppo phones have always been known for their amazing premium designs with the Reno 8 flaunting new design textures on the back. While the frame is made from plastic, the rear panel has a glass body which makes it have a 179g lightweight. However, the Oppo Reno 8 misses out on certified water and dust resistance rating, unlike the OnePlus 10 Pro.

Flipping through the back, you’ll notice a camera bump that’s similar to that of the OnePlus 10 Pro with an in-display fingerprint reader that processes at an amazing speed because of the new optical sensor on display. The Reno 8 power button and volume rocker are positioned on the right side with the SIM card tray on the left.

The Oppo Reno 8 is an amazing phone with sound stereo speakers that produce nice sound quality. Similar to most phones, the Reno 8 has dual speakers with one on top and the other at the bottom which emits great sound quality with a nice amount of bass in it. Unfortunately, there’s no 3.5mm headphone jack which is not a surprise to us as most brands exclude the feature on their smartphones.

Oppo is widely known for its premium color smartphones which distinguishes them from other brands. The Reno 8 debuts in three different colors Black, Silver, and Mint.

Oppo Reno 8
Display

Display

When it comes to display, the Oppo Reno 8 has an outstanding 6.43-inch AMOLED screen with a 90Hz refresh rate just like the Oppo Reno 7. Meanwhile, the display has HDR10+ support, up to 600nits peak brightness level, with FHD+ (1080 × 2400 pixels) resolution, and 409 PPI density. Fortunately, the Oppo Reno 8 display is protected by a Corning Gorilla Glass 5 screen which is the highest we’ve seen on an Android phone yet.

With the Reno 8’s 90Hz refresh rate support, you’ll enjoy a faster display and a more efficient gaming experience. This will make the screen content have deep blacks and high contrast ratio, thanks to the new DCIP3 technology. The 84% screen-to-body ratio paves way for thinner bezels, while the 20:9 aspect ratio makes streaming content or reading with the Oppo Reno 8 display a great one.

Camera

Camera

The Oppo Reno 8 comes with a quad-camera arrangement with one upfront and three at the rear. The back camera is headed by a 50MP Sony IMX sensor which has an f/1.9 aperture and OIS that makes photo and video quality great. Meanwhile, there’s another 8MP ultra-wide lens with a 16mm field-of-view and f/2.2 aperture that makes it sharp and contains good tons on subjects. The third 2MP macro sensor is useless in most situations as it’s too small.

Turning over to the front is a 32MP single punch camera that takes great photos most especially in the daytime. However, the camera struggles at night due to the absence of a LED flashlight which left us disappointed.

When it comes to video, the Oppo Reno 8 can record 4k videos at 60fps with a great amount of detail, thanks to the high-end processor and good software optimisation. Meanwhile, you can also record at 30fps with both the front and back camera which will be sharper.

Performance, Storage, and Software

Performance, Storage, and Software

The Oppo Reno 8 flaunts the new MediaTek Dimesnity 1300 chipset which has a great score in AnTuTu 9 benchmarks. These higher performance cores paired with a 90Hz Super AMOLED display paves way for a smoother phone experience. Meanwhile, the new cooling system tends to improve the Reno 8 gaming experience. Also, the Oppo Reno 8’s Arm Mali-G77 MC9 is one of the most powerful mid-range phone’s GPUs which makes the phone faster than most Android devices.

As for storage, the Oppo Reno 8 will debut with new RAM and storage options of 8GB /128GB and 12GB /256GB. However, there’s an absence of SDcard support which is not an issue since the 256GB variant will contain anything you might want to store in a smartphone.

Similar to the Reno 7, the Oppo Reno 8 will launch with the latest Android 12 out of the box. This unlike the Android 11 has a lot of customisable options and tweaks that’ll satisfy every customer. This is paired with the new Oppo ColorOS 12.1 which introduces new camera app features, fixes old bugs, and comes with a new gaming turbo engine. Meanwhile, the Reno 8 is among Oppo phones that’ll receive the next-gen Android 13 update.

Battery Capacity and Charging

Despite coming with an 88W charger which completely powers the phone from empty to full battery within 40 minutes, the Oppo Reno 8 fails to have an improved battery capacity. Fortunately, there’s wireless charging support which we appreciate as most phones of this price lack the feature.

The Oppo Reno 8 has the same 4500mAh battery capacity just like the Reno 7 which struggles to last for 24 hours if you’re a heavy user. This is less than the Xiaomi 12 Pro (5000mAh) and Tecno Pova 5G (6000mAh) batteries, but more than the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra (4400mAh).

Price and Availability

Oppo Reno 8: Price in Nigeria and Availability

The Oppo Reno 8 will start selling at ₦240,000 (roughly $400) for the 8GB RAM with 128GB variant. This is slightly higher than the launch price of the Reno 7 (₦210,000) but lower than that of the flagship Oppo Find X5 Pro (₦500,000).

As for availability, the Oppo Reno 8 is expected to be on sale in Nigeria, India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, and other countries later this June.
