Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra: Full Review, Specifications, Features, and Price in Nigeria

We still find it hard to believe how the latest Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra was able to compete against the giant Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra and Apple iPhone 12 Pro Max. This excellent smartphone is arguably the best device from the Chinese brand – Xiaomi as it features all the flagship specs needed on a smartphone. The Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra is a super smartphone with an outstanding display and design.

This Ultra tag is seen on the three huge camera bumps on the rear panel of the phone. It’s indeed very huge and easily noticeable. Meanwhile, it gives the phone a unique look and adds to its design aesthetic. Also, there’s a 1.1-inch secondary display on the rear which we’ll talk about later. However, you should know this feature is the biggest bargain of this phone as it gives you a lot of customisable options, and been paired with MIUI 12.5 UI, you’ll surely regret missing this device.

Undoubtedly, the Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra has some of the excellent features of a smartphone ranging from its historic secondary display, outstanding cameras, fantastic processor, and beautiful display to round it up. That triple rear camera is both advantages and disadvantages to some extent. While the only three lenses are one of the best powerful Android cameras, it’s quite unfortunate it makes the phone look bulky, heavy, and discomfort to be placed horizontally.

Saying that the Mi 11 Ultra is a great device is an understatement but rather the best Android smartphone money can buy. The Mi 11 Ultra’s Snapdragon 888 chipset makes it really fast and snappy to use which you’ll notice when playing high-end games or running high graphics apps. On the display side, this is one of the best displays we’ve ever reviewed. The Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra’s 6.81-inch AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate and up to 2k resolution makes the content look great and perfect for streaming Netflix, browsing, or strolling through social media. The 67W fast charging boosts the phone up in small time.

Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra
Design

Design and Build-up

  • Ceramic rear finish
  • Corning Gorilla Glass Victus protection
  • Large camera bump

The Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra is a monster of a phone, thanks to its huge body that makes it hard to slide into your pocket. This Xiaomi gadget would still have a huge size because of its 6.47 x 2.94 x 0.33-in dimensions.

Meanwhile, it weighs 234g, so you should be ready to have a realm of the giant device on your hands. Stretching across to its back is huge triple camera lenses which are perhaps the largest camera module on any smartphone ever. It’s not just the cameras that’ll make your friends ask you which phone is this but also the small 1-inch display built into it.

However, on the right edge of the smartphone are the volume rockers and power button which we found pretty easy to reach and tactile enough for fast response. Meanwhile, on the bottom edge is a USB-C port, but as expected, there’s no 3.5mm headphone jack so wired fans will have to make use of Bluetooth headphones or earbuds. Also, on the top left corner is a slot for the dual-SIM card but no option for physical expandable storage.

Just like on paper, the Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra is well protected as its body is covered by Corning Gorilla Glass Victus which is a first-class type of glass. Interestingly, the phone has IP68 rated protection against water and dust up to 1.5m for 30 mins. Added to its aesthetic is ceramic rear that comes in either white or black colours. The Mi 11 Ultra also has a slight curvature at its edges which paves way for a comfortable handgrip but not compared to that of Samsung Galaxy edge devices.

Meanwhile, there’s no dedicated fingerprint sensor but instead, it’s built into the display. Aside from the fun aspect of the camera bump, the Mi 11 Ultra’s design is sleek, simple, and has a flagship killer outlook. While some may like a simple design that’s not noticeable, many can break the bank to have this phone. However, left for us to choose, the Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra will still retain the top spot as the best designed Android smartphone even in the next few years.

Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra
Display

Display

  • 1.81-inch, 120Hz AMOLED
  • 1440 x 3200 pixels
  • 1.1-inch secondary display

While the camera bump takes a large proportion of the phone’s size, the huge display has its part to play too. At that price, the phone has one of the biggest displays of a smartphone which is the reason it’s not just Ultra in the name only.

A 6.81-inch AMOLED display phone is more than enough to make your gaming and movie streaming sessions fantastic. Not to talk of a QHD+ (1440 x 3200 pixels) resolution that’s brighter, 1b colours that relinquish natural colours, a smooth 120Hz refresh rate, and 1700 nits of the peak of brightness level. Meanwhile, it doesn’t stop here as the Mi 11 Ultra features an HDR 10+ tech alongside Dolby Vision support.

Meanwhile, there’s an in-display fingerprint sensor here for those who don’t like or are tired of having either the rear or side-mounted fingerprint sensors. However, Xiaomi’s usual software and poor RAM management issues make it uncomfortable to use as the phone’s temperature is often hot but we hope they work on that in the next update. Also, the scanner sometimes fails to recognise our thumb which makes us lift and place it back.

So when it comes to the 1-inch secondary display, it has the same size as the Xiaomi Mi Band 6. However, this screen is only used for three different tasks.

Firstly, it acts as an always-on-display, meaning when you position your device upside down you can easily view the date, time, and battery level. However, it’s good to know it’s not actually always on as it turned off after a while depending on how many seconds you set it.

Secondary Display

The Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra’s secondary display second use is as a viewfinder for photography. Camera lovers, this one is for you. When you’re taking photos with the rear camera, the small screen acts as a mirror you can use to view yourself or subject. However, you can imagine what a 1.1-inch screen can serve from a distance which limits its usefulness. Also, it works only on default mode and not portrait.

Lastly, a music control option, sounds crazy right? Xiaomi always tends to offer its fans amazing customizable options. While playing music, you can use the secondary display to play, pause, change and forward music. In fact, this is the best and easiest way to control your music and in reality, we found it pretty enjoyable.

Camera

Cameras

  • 50-MP primary, 48MP ultra-wide, 48MP periscope telephoto lens
  • 20MP selfie camera
  • 8K @24fps, 4K @30/60fps

The Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra is equipped with three camera lenses which is the same number as the iPhone 12 family, one lesser than the OnePlus 9 Pro and Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra. However, you should know that quantity doesn’t necessitate quality as most phones with up to five cameras perform below average.

The rear bump camera is made up of a 50-MP primary shooter which is accompanied by a 48-MP ultra-wide sensor, and another 48-MP telephoto periscopic lens. Upfront is a quality 20-MP front-facing camera with an f/2.2 aperture that takes excellent photos as well.
When it comes to the Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra camera performance, photos taken with the 50-MP main sensor looks fantastic, bright, very colourful, and with enough details. Although the Mi 11 Ultra’s main sensor is lower than the normal Mi 11’s 108-MP lens, it takes more in-depth natural-looking photos than the latter.

In well-lighted settings as well as low-light scenarios in some degrees, images are incredibly sharp and with enough details. It’s hard to find any fault with photos taken with the phone’s primary camera.

When it comes to the periscope lens which is in charge of zoom shots it really impressed us on how quality the images are even at 5x optical zoom. However, quality drops off gradually as we increase up to 120x optical zoom which is the maximum. Fortunately, they’re pretty much acceptable than most brand’s primary camera shots and are good enough for social media upload.

The last 48-MP ultra-wide lens photos were good at least to some extent. Unlike the original Mi 11, it’s quite unfortunate that photos taken with it are distorted at the edges. However, you can easily remove it by cropping the photo. Meanwhile, the macro shots suffer the same faith which makes us wish for it to be replaced by the Mi 11’s telemacro lens.

Over to the front, the 20-MP selfie camera is the best Xiaomi phone has had in a while now. It takes naturally looking photos that are bright, colourful, well detailed, and well balanced enough. Also, you can use the main camera in place of the selfie camera thanks to the viewfinder which you can use to compose them.

Specs Performance and Software

  • Snapdragon 888 chipset
  • 8GB /12GB of RAM
  • 256GB /512GB storage
  • Android 11, MIUI 12.5

Just as expected, the Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra makes use of the powerful Snapdragon 888 chipset which is paired with either 8GB or 12GB of RAM. With these flagship specs, you’re assured of snappy performance either while gaming or during normal day-to-day use. With the fans at heart, Xiaomi equipped a combined choice of 256GB and 512GB storage options and of course with the absence of external storage space. However, with this kind of inbuilt storage, I doubt you’ll still desire more.

Basically, if you want a powerful device for your gaming sessions, the Mi 11 Ultra is the perfect choice for you. High-end games like PUGB, Call of Duty, and Asphalt 9 played smoothly even at the highest refresh rates. For multitasking, the Mi 11 Ultra is also there for you.

The Android 11 OS, alongside Xiaomi’s 12.5 UI added a lot of customisable options to the phone. However, as it has always been with Xiaomi’s MIUI interface, it can be great and also annoying especially after a new update.
When it comes to connectivity, you’re getting the next-gen 5G network connectivity. Also, there’s an IR blaster, NFC, WiFi 6E, and Bluetooth 5.2.

Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra: Battery Capacity

  • 5000mAh
  • 67W wired and wireless charging
  • 10W reverse wireless charging

67W wired and wireless charging
10W reversed wireless charging
The battery section should be considered the weakest part of this phone. The 5000mAh battery life find it difficult to keep up with the huge 120Hz display and powerful processors. In light usage, the Mi 11 Ultra’s battery struggled to remain 40% after day use. This why we won’t recommend buying this phone if you’re solely after the battery and not other specs.

Fortunately, 67W wired and wireless fast charging features are incredibly quick with the wired solution powering the device from empty to full in 36 minutes (as advertised). Also, there’s 10W reverse wireless charging which you can use to power up your Qi-compatible earbuds, smartwatches, and phones.

Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra: Price in Nigeria and Availability

As you’d expect, the Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra won’t be anywhere near affordable. It has a super high price tag like other flagship smartphones. This puts it on par with Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra and Apple iPhone 12 Pro Max. At ₦608,000 (equivalent to $1,600), you can get yourself the basic 8GB of RAM and 256GB storage variant. You can easily get yourself any of the Mi 11 Ultra variants at Jumia, AliExpress, or other reputable online and offline stores worldwide.

The Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra is competing against Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra at ₦525,000 ($1275) and Apple iPhone 12 Pro Max at ₦582,000 ($1,415). Unlike these brands, this is Xiaomi’s first global release that has this hefty price tag.
