Unboxing and Design
As expected, the smartphone comes in a handy little white box with USB-C to USB-A cable, user manual, and a silicone case. Unfortunately, the Redmi 12 didn’t come with a charger in the box making you spend another money separately if you don’t already own one.
When it comes to design, the Xiaomi Redmi 12 has a total design overhaul from what we have with the Redmi 10. It’s more captivating due to the debut of a glossy glass pack on the Xiaomi Redmi series. Also, there’s a notable increase in screen size which caused a slight increase in weight to 198.5g but not compared to most recent Android phones.
Fortunately, the Xiaomi Redmi 12 has a flat design with a plastic side frame which results in a nicer phone look. Meanwhile, there’s no camera module but instead, the three camera lens protrudes triangular, thereby giving it an iPhone-like look. The phone is available in beautiful multiple colour options of Midnight Black, Sky Blue, and Polar Silver.
The right side frame is occupied with a power button that doubles up as a fingerprint unlock alongside the volume control rockers. The hybrid SIM card tray settles near the top edge of the left side while on the top is a 3.5mm headphone jack.
Display
The Xiaomi Redmi 12 apart from the larger 6.79-inch screen doesn’t have other design changes. It has a 1080 × 2460 pixels resolution with a 90Hz refresh rate. The display is a decent one with good colour reproduction and vivid accuracy which every user will love to have.
However, the Redmi 12 display is not among the best when you compare it with the recently released Samsung Galaxy A series or Realme C55, but it’s the sacrifice you have to make if you want something affordable.

Camera
The Redmi 12 didn’t receive many camera changes unlike its design. It’s still stuck with a familiar 50MP primary sensor, alongside an 8MP ultra-wide lens and a 2MP macro sensor. Upfront is an 8MP shooter with f/2.1 aperture.
There aren’t many menus apart from the standard ones that are on the main screen. Be default, the camera is set to 5× zoom which you can choose to increase or reduce depending on what you want to shoot.
Fortunately, despite being a mid-range device, Xiaomi took time to make sure the overall Redmi 12 camera performance wasn’t a disaster. The daylight snaps are solid with image processing impressive. However, the only place you’ll face some challenges is while snapping indoors or at night. Photos taken will lack details, quality, and are generally muddy.
The Xiaomi Redmi 12 8MP selfie camera is pretty decent as images look sharp and crispy. When it comes to video, the main camera can shoot 1080p@30fps which is quite dissatisfied as there’s no 4k. Generally, the Redmi 12 isn’t the right option if your main priority of buying the phone is camera. The recently released Xiaomi Redmi Note 12 is a better preferred option.
Performance, Storage, and Software
The Xiaomi Redmi 12 features a 2021 MediaTek Helio G88 chipset that’s based on the 12nm manufacturing process slightly above the Helio G85. This makes Redmi 12 a great budget option for some basic phone tasks and gaming.
The phone has various storage configurations that include 4GB /128GB, 8GB /128GB, and 8GB /256GB, but all won’t be available depending on your region. Nevertheless, you can choose to upgrade the storage via a dedicated microSD card slot.
The Xiaomi Redmi 12 runs on the latest Android 13 based MIUI 14 that guarantees enticing customizations and features. Thankfully, Xiaomi promises two major Android updates for the Redmi 12 which makes it eligible for Android 14 and 15 respectively. Additionally, you’ll be receiving Xiaomi quarterly security patches frequently.
Battery Capacity and Charging
The Xiaomi Redmi 12 just like 2021 Redmi 10 has a 5000mAh battery capacity which is normal for a smartphone of this price. Fortunately, the Redmi 12 battery cam conveniently lasts for 48 hours if you’re not a heavy user who engages in multiple online games.
When it comes to charging speed, the Xiaomi Redmi 12 boasts of an 18W charging speed. However, since the phone didn’t come with an appropriate charger in the box, you’ll have to find a compatible 18W charger that can match its charging speed.

Xiaomi Redmi 12: Price in Nigeria and Availability
The Xiaomi Redmi 12 was released officially at a selling price of ₦127,000 (roughly $127) for its 4GB /128GB variant. The larger 8GB RAM with the same 128GB built-in storage goes on sale at ₦137,500 (about $138), while the 8GB /256GB model sells at ₦142,500 (equivalent to $143).
