Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 Review: Full Specs, Release Date, and Price in Nigeria

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 is a refinement of last year’s model, sporting improvements over its predecessor including slimmer bezels, a radical redesign, and flatter edges to make for a more premium-feeling device. Even with that, the Galaxy Z Flip 4 is a productive phone aimed at the young crowd who are bewildered with this innovative handset.

Samsung’s mid-year annual unpacked event was everything we anticipated, delivering a new duo of smartwatches across the Galaxy Watch 5 and Galaxy Watch 5 Pro, a pair of new Galaxy Buds 2 Pro, plus Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 foldables.

However, the two Samsung Galaxy foldables have a similar design to their respective predecessors, with the Z Flip 4 rocking a familiar dual rear camera and an external cover display, thereby making it less an innovation and more of a refinement of last year’s model.

So what’s new? Samsung just like other premium brands have been keen to impress and satisfy its users, but to be perfectly honest, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 is more of iterative refinement. However, Samsung did boost the Galaxy Z Flip 4 cameras by integrating a brighter sensor on the main camera, but the same can’t be said about the ultra-wide lens.

As you’ll see this Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 in progress, you’ll discover it’s almost to a disappointing degree and didn’t reach the level you’ll expect of a $999 handset.

Design

Design

From the outside, you won’t find any difference between the Galaxy Z Flip 3 and the new Galaxy Z Flip 4 as both of them sports the same straight-sided look with the back hosting the two rear cameras. However, the Galaxy Z Flip 4 will fit perfectly in your pocket as it looks a lot cleaner and more modern.

Similar to last year, the Galaxy Z Flip 4 has a diverse slate of color options including Bora Purple, Graphite, Pink Gold, Blue, Yellow, White, Navy, Khaki, and Red. Also, if you pick up the Bespoke Edition you’ll have the ability to mix and match both back colors and frame finishes. Meanwhile, the back panel is protected by a Gorilla Glass Victus, along with a colour-matched Aluminum Armor frame.

While there’s no certified protection against grit, the IPX8 water rating that was on last year’s Flip 3 made it to the Galaxy Z Flip 4. There’s no doubt this is the best water protection and no rival foldables offer such protection. Meanwhile, the Galaxy Z Flip 4 has a slimmer and lighter hinge but sports a wide hinge gap which is very noticeable when the phone is closed.

As we earlier said, the Galaxy Z Flip 4 focuses on small improvements and that can be seen in the power button that doubles up as the fingerprint sensor just like last year’s model. Nevertheless, the fingerprint reader is quick to respond once you place your finger properly.

Display

Display

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 has a 6.7-inch Full HD+ (2640 x 1080) ‘Dynamic AMOLED 2X’ panel with a smooth 120Hz refresh rate that can scale down to 1Hz to preserve battery life. According to Samsung, the Galaxy Z Flip 4 is protected by a new version of Samsung’s UTG (ultra-thin glass) 2.0 which they claimed is 20× faster than before.

Fortunately, the Galaxy Z Flip 4 display is nice, with great punchy colors and excellent viewing angles for a wonderful viewing experience. The 22:9 aspect ratio makes usability as good as a standard handset despite having a split screen.

Last year’s Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 saw a larger 1.9-inch Super AMOLED external cover display, the same feature runs through to the Galaxy Z Flip 4. Also, it has a similar 60Hz refresh rate and 260 x 512 resolution too. While the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 cover display looks a lot cleaner and more modern, it shows some useful information and access to SmartThings or Samsung Wallet.

Camera

Camera

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 has three camera arrangements which are similar to the one found on the Galaxy Z Flip 3. The foldable display features a centrally positioned 10MP dot-hole camera, while there are dual OIS-supported 12MP (f/1.8) main sensor and a 12MP (f/2.2) ultrawide lens at the cover display on the back panel.

Samsung revealed that the 12MP main camera is 65× brighter than the one on the Galaxy Z Flip 3, while the rest of the camera hardware remains unchanged. Fortunately, the OIS (optical image stabilization) and VDIS (video digital image stabilization) have been improved, with the latter having a new FlexCam feature. This feature will help orient the UI properly when holding the phone with the hinge folded in a 90-degree position.

Camera

When it comes to nighttime performance, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 did extremely great with the colors looking sharp, excellent, and without loss of detail. When it comes to selfies, the 10MP lens remains unchanged but doesn’t stop it from delivering excellently in perfect condition. Meanwhile, you can use the rear cameras to take selfies when folded in half.

Performance and Storage

Performance and Storage

Fortunately, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 doesn’t skimp on performance as it brought with it the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipset. This is the same chipset found in some of the latest Android phones like the new Xiaomi 12S Ultra and Xiaomi 12S Pro.

This is paired with 8GB of RAM, plus you have an option of choosing either the 128GB, 256GB, or 512GB built-in storage. The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 will easily fly through every task, be it intense gaming, multitasking, or photo editing.

Meanwhile, you won’t find Samsung’s own Exynos silicon chip in this latest Z Flip 4 foldable which will make performance consistent in all the devices. This is unlike the company’s flagships that run on either Snapdragon or Exynos chips depending on your region which will make the camera and general performance of the phone vary between the two versions.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4
Software and Special Features

Software and Special Features

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 ships with One UI 4.1 on top of Android 12. This is similar to the software arrangement on Galaxy S22 Ultra, but the Flip 4 gets access to some special features, especially the Flex Mode.

Flex Mode allows you to position the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4’s sturdy-feeling hinge at multiple angles such as 45 or 90 degrees. This will make your current app split, thereby putting the main functionality on top, while other options and settings remain below.

Among the many apps to receive Flex Mode support include YouTube and Google Duo. For example, you can be watching YouTube videos on top of the screen while at the same time reading comments or browsing through suggested videos on the bottom.

Fortunately, Samsung’s Flex Mode is set to offer support to many creative apps like TikTok, Facebook and Instagram Reels, etc. This will make social media more efficient on Foldables than on the standard Android phone.

Also, there’s a new trackpad feature that allows you to easily navigate through apps faster. The external cover screen does not only display basic information like weather, battery percentage, and notifications, but it also allows you to set a custom background and add more widgets.

Interestingly, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 is reported to be among the phones that’ll enjoy Samsung’s top-tier Android policy. That means the Z Flip 4 will not only receive Android 13 but up to Android 16 along with five years of security patches (2027). This makes Samsung one of the best Android phones because of its excellent Android update longevity.

Battery Life and Charging

Battery Life and Charging

Although Samsung listened to criticisms by improving the Galaxy Z Flip 4 battery from 3300mAh to 3700mAh, we still felt it was too small for an Android phone. The extra 400mAh doesn’t push it to one of the best Android phones with strong battery life, but rather one of the worst we’ve seen this year.

However, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 gets 25W fast charging support, so you don’t have to worry about slow charging this time around. This will help charge the phone from 0 to 50% in just 30 minutes (as advertised). Meanwhile, there are 15W fast charging and Reverse wireless charging of 4.5W.

Release Date and Price in Nigeria

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 Review: Release Date and Price in Nigeria

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 will be officially released on August 26, 2022, in the global market. If you intend to buy the phone, you can pre-order it from Samsung to get a free storage upgrade and a Silicone Ring Case or Strap Case to put it in.

As for the price, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 will start selling at ₦659,000 (roughly $999) for the 128GB of storage and 8GB of RAM. If you want the higher 256GB model, you’ll have to pay ₦698,000 (about $1,059) or ₦778,000 ($1,179) for the 512GB storage. However, bear in mind the only difference is more storage room as their RAM remains the same in all models.

Despite a slight hike in prices of smartphones this year, the Galaxy Z Flip 4 seems to be a fair value among clamshell foldables on the market.
