Tecno Camon 15 Review: Camera, Specs, and Price in Nigeria

How much is the Tecno Camon 15 in Nigeria?

The Tecno Camon 15 is officially launched in Nigeria just a few months after the release of the Camon 12 series with the Transsion company skipping the numbers 13 and 14 respectively. Obviously, the new series came with a lot of expectations bearing in mind Tecno is a popular brand among Nigeria and other African and some Asian countries. Meanwhile, the Tecno Camon 15 is quite affordable with lots of specs that’ll suit this price and amazing camera performance to wrap it up.

However, this is a new era of smartphone makers and you won’t expect anything short of amazing performance on the Camon 15. Undoubtedly, the camera is the most notable feature of this phone as it takes amazing photos, especially in daylight settings. In terms of general performance, you’re getting a decent performance on the Camon 15 but don’t expect to play high-end games smoothly on this device.

As a potential buyer, you might like to know whether the Camon 15 is worth going for or about its camera performance. Fortunately, Techcity has provided answers to them including the smartphone’s price in the Nigerian markets.

Tecno Camon 15 Key Specifications

  • Display: 6.6-inches AMOLED
  • Resolution: 720 x 1600 pixels
  • Processor: MediaTek Helio P22
  • Front Camera: 16-megapixel
  • Rear Camera: 48-megapixel 2-megapixel + 2-megapixel + QVGA
  • RAM: 4GB
  • Storage: 64GB
  • Battery Capacity: 5000mAh
  • OS: Android 10, HIOS 6.0

Design and Display

Just like its name Camon, you already know it’s a camera focused device so don’t expect to have the best design on this smartphone. The Tecno Camon 15 ‘s rear panel is equipped with quad-camera sensors, along with a four-tone LED flash all positioned at the top left corner. This is a design trend you might love or hate but it depends on your individual preference.

Also, there’s a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner that’s capacitive. It’s very reliable and unlocks at just one touch. Unfortunately, rear-mounted fingerprint scanners have been replaced by either in-display or side-mounted ones. However, its reliability makes it quite useful considering the price tag of the phone.

At the bottom end of the phone are a headphone jack, speaker grill, and micro-USB port. Unfortunately, there’s no USB-C support here which makes the phone look some kind of outdated. Meanwhile, wired headphone jack fans are not left out as you can privately enjoy your favourite music with earphones by connecting it to the 3.5mm headphone jack. All buttons of the phone are intact with the power button and volume rockers perfectly positioned on the top right corner of the phone. The left side accommodates both the SIM tray and a microSD card space to supplement the 64GB built-in storage.

Flipping over to the front is a wide 6.6-inch HD+ (720 × 1200 pixels) display that’s bright and colourful. However, it’s still a surprise to us why Tecno had stuck at this panel why other competitors have upgraded to FHD resolution and AMOLED panels.

That aside, the Camon 15‘s display is bright enough for indoor use but will struggle when exposed outdoor. However, you’ll have to live with some screen limitations especially the punch-hole notch interrupting the all-screen display of the phone. Meanwhile, the Camon 15 Premier is more preferable in this case as it features a pop-up selfie camera.

Cameras

Undoubtedly, the Tecno Camon series has always focused on camera the same way the Pouvoir family is centred on plenty of powers. The latest edition of the Tecno Camon 15 series – Camon 15 Air, Camon 15, and Camon 15 Premier a have fantastic camera sensors to satisfy your photography needs.

The Tecno Camon 15 camera sensors include a 48MP primary shooter, alongside dual 2MP sensors, and a QVGA lens. In terms of video, the device is capable of shooting 1080p videos at 30fps. Upfront is a 16MP sensor that takes care of the selfie camera. While it has the same camera arrangement as the Camon 15 Air, the Camon 15 Premier instead features a pop-up selfie camera style.

Right off the bat, the Tecno Camon 15 delivers amazing photography performance but not compared to those of flagship smartphones. There’s a beauty mode that smoothens the skin to make you look more pretty. Also, the selfie camera is great too, at least to some extent, but don’t expect to get the best selfie camera performance from this phone.

Processor, Performance, and Software

Under the hood is an Octa-core MediaTek Helio P22 chipset that’s paired with 4GB of RAM to deliver amazing phone performance. Well, with these low specs, you won’t expect to have the best gaming performance on this smartphone. However, considering the price, the Camon 15 runs everything as expected. Meanwhile, you’ll not experience any slowdown or lagging unless you push the phone beyond its limit.

Meanwhile, apps should be kept in check since you have a limited storage space of 64GB. Fortunately, you can choose to upgrade the built-in storage via the microSD card. As a reminder, Tecno really need to start equipping the Camon series with better chipsets that’ll be great for gaming. Anything beyond that should be regarded as an advantage.

The device ships in Android 10 which is more preferable compared to the older version. However, we’re not sure yet whether the Camon 15 will receive an Android 11 update, but anything that happens is definitely worth it.

There are a lot of things you’d love about the HiOS interface. The dark mode is absolutely one of them especially for fans who hate having a bright screen. Also, during the night, you can activate a blue light filter from the settings. Fortunately, the system-wide fonts can also be changed likewise other features of the phone. However, the constant ads that keep on popping out of the screen are quite annoying but that’s the way Tecno has to keep the price of their smartphones low.

Tecno Camon 15: Battery Capacity

The Tecno Camon 15 Battery life is excellent, thanks to its 5000mAh battery capacity that’s a major upgrade from the last model. This is huge and you’re guaranteed a full day of use and maybe 48 hours if you’re a fragile user.

As a reminder, Tecno needs to upgrade the camera series charging speed which could be in form of fast charge technology. The Tecno Camon 15 takes over 2 hours to charge from empty to a full battery which is annoying especially where there’s an inconsistent power supply.

Tecno Camon 15: Price in Nigeria and Availability

At ₦70,000 (about $127), the Camon 15 is pricier than the Camon 12 at launch. However, this might be due to the significant upgrades on the phone. Meanwhile, it’s priced below the Camon 15 Premier ₦105,000 (equivalent to $190) and costlier than the Camon 15 Air ₦65,000 (almost $118).

Fortunately, you can buy any of the Camon 15 variant Jumia, AliExpress, and other online and offline accredited stores in Nigeria.
