Nokia G20 Review: Features, Specs, and Price in Nigeria

While many might not have come across a Nokia Android smartphone, the Nokia G20 is one of the company’s most reliable smartphones that was released in 2021. Nokia has renewed its smartphone lineup, introducing the new C-series, G-series, and X-series. The Nokia G20 is the latest addition to their G-series lineup which delivers competitive specs.

The Nokia G20 strictly followed the footsteps of Nokia’s solid phones of the past. This means the phone is well-built and can last longer with two years of guaranteed software updates, so you get to experience non-stop refreshed new features. Up front, there’s a 6.52-inch water drop-notch screen with 720 x 1600 pixels resolution. The Nokia G20 packs a Mediatek Helio G35 chipset at heart which is coupled with 4GB of RAM.

Though this phone seems affordable at $170, with the huge number of affordable smartphones all over the market today, the Nokia G20 will struggle to compete especially with its direct rival, the Xiaomi Redmi 10 2022.

Design

The design of the Nokia G20 isn’t the best rather could it be the worst. Budget smartphones are looking much better these days and the Nokia G20 really did the best it could. Though you may get a teardrop notch screen and small chin bezels on the bottom, the 6.52-inch screen also occupies almost the whole front panel of the phone. The Nokia G20 debuts in two colors namely the Glacier and Night colors.

Flip over to the rear, there’s a plastic material just like we expected from a budget smartphone. The plastic rear has a textured finish which helps for a firm grip and prevents the surface from attracting smudges and fingerprints. Also, there’s a circular camera bump on the back which hosts a quad-camera setup. At 164.9 x 76 x 9.2mm, the G20 can easily fit into your pocket and it doesn’t weigh much at 197g.

We’re excited to see a budget smartphone with a side-mounted fingerprint scanner. A feature which most companies reserved for their expensive premium phones now works well in a $170 G20. The volume rocker is positioned slightly above the fingerprint scanner at the right edge while the top edge features a 3.5mm headphone jack.

Display

The display of the Nokia G20 is nice, but just below our expectations. We had no problems with the 6.52-inch which isn’t that big enough, but the LCD with a 60Hz refresh rate is what we didn’t expect at this price point. Also, the 450nits of max brightness is only enough for indoor usage, so you may struggle to see the screen while in a sunny environment. The color accuracy is okay with an RGB gamut coverage of 83.9%.

We also found the resolution a bit disappointing with 720 x 1600 pixels, though we shouldn’t expect a Full HD resolution. Our main concern is the refresh rate which 90Hz should have been better, at least to make up for the AMOLED display which you will hardly get at such a price.

Camera

The Nokia G20 has a quad-camera setup on the rear which features a 48MP main camera, 5MP ultra-wide shooter, and 2MP auxiliary macro and depth sensors. Fortunately, the main camera can capture some nice pictures with enough details while in good light conditions. Unlike the main camera, the 5MP ultra-wide shooter doesn’t take enough detailed images, though sometimes photos look great, especially on a plenty-bright day.

In low-light conditions, you can use the dedicated Night mode which aids in brightening the scene, but you can’t run away from capturing less-detailed images. You have to capture a few more times to get the best results while in Night mode. The 8MP selfie shooter is common in most budget phones, while some may come with 5MP. You can take portrait shots, record videos, and make video calls with the selfie camera.

Generally, the camera performance of the Nokia G20 is impressive when there’s enough light just as we explained above. In challenging light conditions, you can capture decent photos, but don’t expect the best from them.

Performance, Storage, and Software

Under the hood, the Nokia G20 has an octa-core Mediatek Helio G35 processor, supported by a decent PowerVR GE8320 graphics processor. Though that’s not a powerful chipset, but still goes well with the price. When it comes to performance, the Nokia G20 isn’t all that trustworthy. Scrolling through your media feeds, multitasking, and browsing the internet runs smoothly with this phone.

However, you might run into some lag issues once you start launching two or three apps. If you aren’t too much of a gamer, then you won’t experience any issues while playing some low-graphics which works very well with this phone. Conversely, playing graphics-demanding games like PUGB mobile or Call of Duty mobile is often problematic, even with the lowest graphics settings.

The Nokia G20 comes with 4GB of RAM paired with either 64GB or 128GB of internal storage depending on the model you choose. There’s also an option for the expansion of memory through the dedicated microSD card slot.

Based on the Android 11 operating system, the Nokia G20 also comes with Android One. This means you’ll have to rely on Google’s interface as well as apps for your basic needs. Using Google’s Android One also means that this phone will receive the Android 12 and Android 13 software updates, including two years of security updates.

Battery

The Nokia G20 comes with a 5050mAh battery capacity and 10W fast charging support which is overwhelming. With a 720p display and a relatively small Mediatek Helio G35 chipset, this phone will easily last you a day for your daily activities. Meanwhile, the battery might drain faster after hours of performing some demanding tasks.
