Android 13 is the next-gen chapter of Google’s popular operating system which is the direct successor of last year’s Android 12. The operating system is expected to build on features established in the Android 12 like the new Material You, while also bringing in new features that’ll improve security and overall user experience.
Over the years, major software updates are usually followed up by new ones that patch and perfect the newly introduced formula. As we all know that last year’s Android 12 is a major update, so we’re expecting the Android 13 to be such an update.
Fortunately, the Android 13 public beta version is already out for eligible devices to opt-in with the next version scheduled to be officially showcased at the all-virtual Google I/O 2022 dev summit on May 11, 2022.

Android 13: Release Date
Following the release of two public beta versions, we’ll now await the official release of the stable version of Android 13. Fortunately, Google has been following a general software release pattern for a few years now, so with this, we already know when the next-gen operating system will be out for download.
Judging from this information, the Android 13 will be officially released in August or early September 2022. This is expected to be after at least another couple of public beta versions which will give developers the green light to update their apps for the upcoming release.

Android 13: Supported Devices
While the Android 13 is already in the public beta stage, it’s relatively easy to guess the phones that’ll be eligible from those that were able to test the software early. However, that doesn’t mean other devices aren’t supported. So far, the Google Pixel 4 onwards, OnePlus 10 Pro, Oppo Find X5 Pro, and Realme GT 2 Pro can have access to the Android 13 public beta. Meanwhile, we’re certain that other devices will have access too after the official announcement of Android 13.
Furthermore, the safest guarantee of receiving Android 13 is to own a recent Google Pixel phone with the 2019 Pixel 4 and newer models already promised an upgrade to the next-gen Android software.

Beyond the listed devices, other mid-range and flagship phones of last year or two will receive the update eventually. Meanwhile, most companies already promised two to three new generations of Android software for their smartphones and tablets, so it all depends on your phone’s manufacturer.
Android 13: New Features
One of the biggest features brought to Android 12 was the introduction of Material You – a new design language feature for a better Android user experience. Beyond that, there’s a new privacy and security controls, and a heap of other amazing features including a scrollable screenshot, one-handed mode, etc.
Now that the first and second developer previews are out, it’ll be easier to get an insight of what the new software will offer as they shed some light on some of the Android 13 new features. With that and some healthy rumours we’ve gathered so far, here are the features and improvements we expect to see on the next-gen Android operating system.

Visual Improvements
One of Android 12 wonders is the ability to blend the colour of your wallpaper into your interface. Fortunately, Google seems to be expanding the functionality in Android 13 by offering four pre-made colour themes. Apart from that, the next-gen OS will introduce a bunch of quality-of-life improvements to the interface.
Meanwhile, the Google Stock Android version that’s on Pixel and Nokia phones now has Themed Icons which extracts your wallpaper colour and applies it as a tint on your app icons. However, this feature is only limited to your home screen and works with stock apps. Furthermore, Android 13 will introduce a redesigned wallpaper picker that allows you to preview the available backgrounds straight from your home screen by long-pressing an empty space.
Multilingual Apps
Multilingual lovers will now have a reason to upgrade to Android 13 as it now has relevant APIs that allow separate apps to have a specific language other than the main language of your device. For example, your Android phone language could be set to French, but separate apps could be set to English. You can access this feature by going to Settings > System > Languages & Input > App Languages menu.

Privacy and Security
Android 13 will have three additional granular media permissions to request. “READ MEDIA IMAGES,” “READ MEDIA AUDIO,” and “READ MEDIA VIDEO” that’ll replace the existing “external storage access” popups. This will undoubtedly improve the micromanagement of app permissions.
Also, it’s rumoured that the next-gen software update will have a new Privacy and Security menu that’ll not only rate your current privacy & security status but also provide regular timely recommendations. Fortunately, the enhancements to privacy and permissions in Android 13 will allow the user to revoke permissions automatically. This will disable the permissions previously granted to an app and further improve the device’s privacy and security.
Photo Picker
As part of user security and privacy improvement, Android 13 introduces a new photo picker that’s similar to the one found in iOS. Unlike before, this will allow you to share a photo with an app or website without granting it access to your entire gallery. This is a major improvement unlike the normal behaviour of Android’s photo picker which by default has access to your photo gallery once you grant permission to read your whole photo library.
