The Hong Kong-based Transsion Holding company has launched the new Infinix Smart 5 in Nigeria. This Smart 5 series becomes the first line up from the company to have a pop-up selfie camera that distinguishes it from the competition. However, the feature is limited only to the Smart 5 Pro model as the base Smart 5 has just a tear-drop notch for the selfie camera.
The budget phone category is undoubtedly dominated by Xiaomi, Vivo, Oppo, and a few Samsung offerings, but Infinix has what it takes to compete in the market. It’s a decent looking device with an average camera and performed more than some pricier phones. The Infinix Smart 5 has a superb battery life that can comfortably last you for a day.

Design and Display
The Infinix Smart 5 has a typical design structure a basic budget phone would have but added more to it with a rear plastic finish. There’s no doubt the Smart 5 is a decent looking phone with a glossy finish and feel. At a time when smartphone makers are thriving to compromise the size of phones, Infinix did the job well by making the Smart 5 as slim as possible. While this might discourage fans of large displays, the phone has an average size that’ll suit every fan.
There’s a vertically placed camera module on the left side of the rear panel with the fingerprint sensor in the centre. However, the phone’s back panel easily attracts fingerprints magnet that’ll make it look old. Also, being a plastic handset, it’s slippery and will require the use of a proper phone case.
The phone comes in triple colour options of Ocean Wave, Quetzal Cyan, and Midnight Black. The power button and volume rocker are placed in their rightful position (right side) with the SIM /SDcard slot on the left.
The Infinix Smart 5 has a 6.6-inch display with HD+ (720 × 1600) resolution and an impressive 83.2% screen-to-body ratio. We enjoyed watching movies and playing games with the Smart 5 as it gave us the Camon 15 feeling despite selling a bit lower.
At such a price, the Infinix Smart 5 has a good display quality that’s comparable to some pricier phones.

Camera
The Infinix Smart 5 camera was among the most hyped features of the phone, but it failed to deliver to our expectations. However, the Pro model has a pop-up selfie camera that’s unique and good for a phone of such price.
Meanwhile, the Smart 5 8MP selfie camera is more of average than excellent as pictures taken rarely impressed us. However, you’ll get brighter pictures in bright light conditions than in low light. Fortunately, the selfie camera has some AI features like Emoji, Beauty, and many others to play around with.
Coming to the rear, the Smart 5 has a dual-camera set-up which comprises of an 8MP primary shooter and a QVGA lens. The pictures taken during the day turned out to be impressive as they were sharp and with balanced colour contrast. The bokeh effect helps to blur the picture background and it was extremely detailed. However, just like most mid-range phones, lowlight performance wasn’t so good. They were so exposed and failed to capture the essence of a scene.

Performance and Software
The Infinix Smart 5 is powered by a MediaTek Helio A20 chipset paired with either 2GB or 3GB of RAM depending on the model you’re going for. On the other hand, you can choose between 32GB or 64GB inbuilt storage variants with an option to expand through SDcard.
We found out the phone responds fast, and works well with most apps without any lag. However, you’ll notice some delays while trying to play high-end games. Also, most apps tend to reopen when trying to switch between them. This is just a basic phone that’ll give you the best service if you don’t push it beyond the limit.
The Infinix Smart 5 runs on the Android 10 (Go Edition) operating system, alongside XOS overlay. As normal with most Transsion Holding company phones, the Infinix Smart 5 is filled with ads that pop up whenever the phone’s data is on. We understand the approach is to compensate small profit margins for the hardware, but they’re quite annoying.

Battery
The Infinix Smart 5 is packed up with an impressive 5000mAh Li-Po battery which gives it an edge over most mid-rangers. This means you can watch your favourite movies, and play some music or game as long as you like without worrying about battery drainage. However, there’s no fast charging support in this phone, but the bigger Smart 6 has a 10W fast charging support which can power the phone in under 1hr 40mins from empty to full battery.
Infinix Smart 5: Price in Nigeria and Availability
The Infinix Smart 5 is a decent device with some interesting features. However, if you fancy a pop-up selfie camera, you should go for the Pro model which has some better features.
As for the price, the Infinix Smart 5 is currently sold at ₦55,000 ($94) for the 2GB /32GB model, while the one with higher 3GB of RAM and 64GB storage goes slightly higher at ₦67,000 (roughly $114). At this price, there are plenty of options to choose from like the Samsung Galaxy A12 (₦75,000).
