Up until 2019, Apple iPhone and iPad devices ran the same operating system before the company launched a separate software for its iPad called iPadOS. The iPadOS is similar to iOS apart from the iPad-specific features that are not supported in iPhones. As expected, Apple is going to launch the iPadOS 16 this year with additional features and improvements.
2021 iPadOS 15 brought the much-needed changes to Apple tablets, but as technology advances, better upgrades will be needed and that’s what 2022 iPadOS 16 is here to solve. The question is, will the update worth upgrading to? As an Apple user for over a decade now, the company has been known for its relentless effort in providing the best for its customers and that has been proven with the addition of the extension into Safari.

iPadOS 16: Expected Release Date
Last year iPadOS 15 was released in September, so we’re expecting the same release pattern this year. Meanwhile, Apple tends to release new updates for its iPadOS, iOS, tvOS, watchOS, and macOS towards the first month of the third quarter of the year.
Those familiar with Apple will know the company officially reveal new software updates at its WWDC with this year’s own coming up on June 6. After the event, Apple will roll out a beta version of the update to app developers for implementation, with public beta testers weeks later.
However, when exactly will the iPadOS 16 be released? Fortunately, we’re not too far from that since the beta version will be available next month. Furthermore, the Apple iPadOS 16 will have its global release probably in September 2022.

iPadOS 16: Supported iPad Devices
The iPadOS 16 compatibilities will depend on whether the new operating system will require specific hardware. Since Apple unlike Android doesn’t have a longer yearly update time frame as the iPhone 6s still receives the iOS 15 update, it’s very much possible the new OS will support a host of iPads. However, while the iPadOS 15 supports a ton of older iPads including the iPad Air 2 (2014) and iPad Mini 4 (2015), they’re likely not to get the iPadOS 16 updates because of their ageing processors.
If the two old iPads didn’t eventually receive the update, then the following iPads are going to receive the iPadOS 16;

iPadOS 16: Expected Features
Right now, there’s nothing official about the iPadOS 16 features as we’re still months away from its release. However, we’ve outlined our expectations about the next operating system based on the rumours we’ve gathered so far.

Redesigned app icons
iDropNews reports that the app icons will be redesigned on iPadOS 16 just like in iOS 16. They also reported that first-party app icons are already in development by the VP of Human Interface Design at Apple – Alan Dye. However, there are no concrete details on how the redesigned icons will be, but it has been said that they’ll have a very similar look to that of the macOS Monterey icons.
Lockscreen Widgets
The iPad lock screen is rumoured to come with a new look on the next operating system after seeing minimal or zero changes on previous updates. It’s reported that widgets will be coming to both iOS 16 and iPadOS 16 lock screens in what could be considered a total overhaul. However, we’re not sure whether you can customise the widgets by adding new ones, but we hope to see the feature.
