Huawei P50 Pro Review: Full Specs, Features, and Price in Nigeria

Huawei P50 Pro camera performance and price

Despite the US sanctions and ongoing chip shortages, Huawei doesn’t need to prove that it can make better flagship phones than other manufacturers. The new Huawei P50 Pro has pushed boundaries when it comes to design, photography, and phone performance.

The challenge started when the United States imposed a restriction on Chinese companies including Huawei from using Google’s Services. Since then, the company has strived to develop its own platform based on Android which will make app developers publish their apps on its own App Store. However, while there has been significant progress on this, the company still needs to win over bigger apps like TikTok, WhatsApp, Facebook, Snapchat, and many other social media apps.

Apart from the software, the Huawei P50 Pro is an impressive device that can compete with other flagships in the market. The phone has a gorgeous, striking, and thin design that easily fits in your hand. The integrated Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 chipset with a class-leading 8GB of RAM makes the phone run smoothly. While the phone lacks 5G support, that won’t be a problem as the latest technology is not yet available in most regions.

Nevertheless, the Huawei P50 Pro shines in the photography department which isn’t a surprise to us as the company has tons of excellent camera devices, especially with the P series. While the battery isn’t the best we’ve seen, it can easily last you through a day of moderate use. However, what we love about the P50 Pro’s battery is its 66W wired fast charging and 50W wireless charging which enables you to top up the phone quickly.

Overall, the Huawei P50 Pro has what it takes to make it one of the best flagship phones of 2022. Ultimately though, the lack of basic Google apps like Gmail, YouTube, Google Photos, Maps, etc, will dictate whether or not the P50 Pro will make it into your gadgets arsenal.

Design and Build-up

Similar to other P50 series phones, the Pro comes with the company’s latest ‘Dual-Matrix Camera Design that’s punctuated by two circular huge bumps. Three of the phone’s rear camera sensors are placed in the top module while the telephoto lens alongside the camera flash and autofocus system are positioned in the lower.

Huawei has been known for releasing good-looking phones that certainly stand out be intimidating and intriguing to other brands. The P50 Pro was introduced in four colours – Charm Pink, Cocoa Gold, Pearl White, and Golden Black. However, the colours that are available to you will depend on the region you are, so don’t expect to see all the colour options in your country.

The Huawei P50 Pro is a premium device that looks stylish and sits well in the hand, measuring just 158.8 x 72.8mm with 185g weight. This produces a refreshingly thin and light-feeling device with an IP68 rated dust and water resistance. However, just like most modern phones, the P50 Pro lacks a headphone jack or USB-C to 3.5mm adapter in the box, so you’ll go for a Bluetooth headset if you want to listen privately.

Similar to most modern Huawei flagship phones, the P50 Pro volume rocker and power button sit on the right side while the left is occupied by the USB Type-C port and the SIM tray. The phone has dual speakers which are located on the top and bottom with the fingerprint scanner inscribed behind the screen which is curved into the metallic edges. However, the phone has a slick metallic surface that easily attracts fingerprints, but you can prevent it by using a phone case.

Display

In a thin frame is a 6.6-inch OLED screen that introduces a 120Hz refresh rate into the P series. Huawei pushed this display further by introducing a 300Hz touch sampling rate and 10-bit colour support with 450ppi. This is paired with exceptional angles and a 2700 x 1229 pixels high-resolution screen that looks sharp.

The sumptuous display colour reproduction is excellent and great for watching movies or playing games. Fortunately, the refresh rate can be set to Dynamic mode which automatically adjusts the refresh rate depending on what you’re doing which in return helps to save battery.

Camera

Huawei P50 Pro: Cameras

The Huawei P50 Pro is equipped with one of the most beautiful camera modules which are home to four AI-powered Leica cameras. The photography department is headed by a 50MP primary shooter that’s assisted by a 64MP periscope telephoto lens with 3.5x optical zoom, a 13MP ultra-wide lens, and a 40MP monochrome sensor. Upfront is a single 13MP selfie camera with enough quality for social media posting and other situations.

A phone with this camera hardware will be expected to take stunning photos and the P50 Pro didn’t disappoint. The image processor performed very well such that all-important skin tones look truer to life. We love the way the Huawei P50 Pro camera setup is as we’re able to get an ultra-wide view mode as well as a dedicated macro mode for close-up images.

When it comes to lowlight photography, the Huawei P50 Pro took impressive pictures, but they’re not among the sharpest among other competitors. And oddly, the night mode didn’t improve things, rather it makes it worse as the longer exposure introduced blur into photos.

As for video recording, the P50 Pro can record 4k videos at up to 60fps. Unlike the ultra-wide lens, Huawei integrated an optical image stabilization (OIS) into the primary and periscope telephoto lens. Overall, the video experience from the Huawei P50 Pro is good if you’re smooth with your movements and don’t switch lenses while recording.

Performance and Software

The Huawei P50 Pro is being run by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 5G chip found in recent flagship phones. The chipset is paired with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of built-in storage which is sufficient enough for all your files. However, there are 128GB and 512GB versions available with a bump in RAM to 12GB which is available in most regions.

As you might expect, the Huawei P50 Pro is extremely smooth and snappy in day-to-day use with a Geekbench 5 score of 3018. While the P50 Pro can’t enjoy the benefits of 5G services due to restrictions, it still managed to get a download speed of 292 Mbps which is impressive.

Similar to other Huawei phones, the P50 Pro comes with Android software but without Google services due to US restrictions. Nevertheless, the Huawei P50 Pro runs on EMUI 12, although the Chinese version of the phone has HarmonyOS.

The UI looks beautiful with redesigned icons and fonts to suit the user’s preference. However, the lack of Google apps is something Huawei fans will need to adjust to since the company is already putting a lot of effort into getting app developers to port their apps to App Gallery. Fortunately, you can access Gmail, YouTube, or Google Photos using a web browser even though it won’t be an ideal experience.

Battery Capacity and Charging

Despite having a thin and light body, the Huawei P50 Pro managed to squeeze in a 4360mAh battery which is the highest in the P series yet. However, with the absence of a 5G network, the phone’s battery will be able to last for a full day on moderate use.

EMUI is known for its heavy-handed background management which is the reason behind the phone’s longevity. This translates to around 7 hours of screen-on-time before connecting the phone to a charger.

Thankfully, Huawei integrated the phone with Mate 40 series 66W fast charging support via the included brick which powers the handset from 0 to 70% in 30 mins. What’s more, it has a 50W wireless charging speed that allows you to easily place the phone on a pad when working or while in a meeting. Unfortunately, Huawei has decided to omit the reverse wireless charging that has been on previous models for the reason best known to them.
