Realme 9 Pro Plus Review: Specs, Features, and Price in Nigeria

Realme 9 Pro Plus spec performance and price

The Realme 9 Pro Plus brings a new value to the company’s budget segment. Launched as the “Pro Plus” of the handset range alongside a Realme 9 Pro version, this is an impressive device that shows us what Realme is capable of.

Since the Realme X2 Pro, the company has gone from strength to strength in bringing an excellent device to the mid-range market. Surprisingly, Realme integrated a heart rate monitor into the fingerprint scanner which is one of its kind as we weren’t expecting this feature in a mid-range phone. The Realme 9 Pro Plus has a bizarre design that changes colour in sunlight, going from a sparkly blue to bright red.

The Realme 9 Pro Plus shares the same Sony IMX766 sensor with OIS as the Oppo Find X3 Pro. This keeps it on par with the pricier OnePlus Nord 2. For photography lovers, this phone could make it the budget alternative to the Google Pixel 6, giving you an excellent camera performance at a bargain price.

The phone’s processing power, camera performance, and charging speed are all above average making it hard to critique this device. The Realme 9 Pro Plus does all this without many hikes in price, making it a perfect phone for nearly all buyers. In fact, it’s good enough to rival Xiaomi and Oppo budget phone lines.

The Realme 9 Pro Plus truly impressed us from all angles, giving us a great benchmark to compare future similarly priced phones to. But can it stack up with the Xiaomi Redmi Note 11S?

Design

The Realme 9 Pro Plus has a smart and premium design with its glass back, plastic sides, and glass front. The phone sports a novel design pattern that’s reflective and clings onto fingerprints. You can pick it up in Aurora Green or Sunrise Blue if you want more vibrant styling or Midnight Black for something more classy.

The phone features what Realme called a ‘Light Shift Design’ with those colour changing backs which flicker between shades as you flip them more like the Vivo V23. It gradually turns from blue to bright red when you leave it in sunlight. This is a cool trick and a design pattern everybody would like to have.

Beyond that eye-catching gimmick is a strongly built smartphone that weighs just 182g with 160.2 x 73.3 x 8 mm dimensions. Unlike most recent phones, the Realme 9 Pro Plus comes with a 3.5mm headphone jack for wired fans, accompanied by a USB-C port on the bottom. The power button and volume rocker are shifted to the right and left edges of the phone respectively.

Display

Display

At 6.43-inch, the Realme 9 Pro Plus is a fairly-medium sized Android device with Full HD+ (1080 × 2400 pixels) resolution and 90Hz refresh rate which suits a phone of this price.

With a Super AMOLED screen, it’s a perfectly cool device for streaming videos or playing games. It produces fairly natural colours with up to 600 nits brightness level and 441 ppi density. This means the screen is bright enough to view outdoors and the 441 pixel-per-inch (PPI) density puts it almost on par with the iPhone 13 (460 PPI).

Disrupting the smooth display is a punch-hole cutout on the top left for the selfie camera. Moving down is an in-display fingerprint scanner that doubles as a heart rate monitor. This is a fun addition that we’re surprised to see on a mobile phone as they’re mostly found on smartwatches, though obviously, it won’t be accurate as them. Nevertheless, you can locate this feature by searching for it in the phone’s Settings app.

Camera

Camera

The Realme 9 Pro Plus has three rear cameras headed by a 50MP main shooter, which is joined by an 8MP ultra-wide lens, and finally a 2MP macro camera module.

You’ll definitely be astonished by the photo quality of this phone as snaps were taken with sharp details and enough contrast, especially with the ultra-wide lens. The Sony IMX766 sensor that’s on the main snapper is large enough and takes in more light to make night pictures look great, sharp, well-exposed, and full of details.

It’s rare to see a budget phone with good low-light photography, but the Realme 9 Pro Plus surprised us on that. This phone is our favourite camera handset of late.

Realme has style – With a front camera resolution of 16MP, selfies looked ok with an f/2.4 lens and a 27mm focal length. However, they aren’t super-wide, thereby limiting the number of people that can get into the selfie frame.

The Realme 9 Pro Plus camera captures 30fps video at up to 4k resolution but can go up to 60fps if you drop the resolution down to 1080p. Video quality was great as expected with a manual ISO of up to 6400, and a shutter speed as long as 32 seconds. The phone comes with several shooting modes including Portrait, Macro, Panorama, Night, Video, Photo, Pro Mode, semi-automatic Street Mode, and more.

Performance and Software

Performance and Software

The Realme 9 Pro Plus just like the aforementioned colour-changing Vivo V23 comes with MediaTek Dimesnity 920 5G chipset. The 5G modem allows you to connect to top-tier connectivity networks if your region offers it. Surprisingly, the phone benchmarks well for this price more than some flagship phones from the past years. The Realme new cooling tech makes the phone not heat up quickly while playing high intensive games.

The phone comes with dual RAM options of 6GB and 8GB, but with a RAM extension that’s on by default. This lets you get up to 5GB extra with the 8GB RAM variant. On the other hand, there are 128GB and 256GB storage models, but with no room for expansion.

The Realme 9 Pro Plus runs on the latest Android 12 software from Google alongside the company’s own Realme UI 3.0 laid on top.

This allows you to enjoy the amazing benefits of the latest Android OS including an option to customise the app icons to match your home screen wallpaper. However, Realme just like most mobile phone OEMs integrated the device with a few bloatware apps like LinkedIn, Amazon Shopping, Booking.com, etc.

Battery Capacity and Charging

Similar to its display, the Realme 9 Pro Plus battery is another feature of the phone that’s average. However, while the phone’s 4500mAh battery isn’t good enough, the chipset is clearly pretty efficient to cover up for it.

The battery can easily last for a day’s use notwithstanding whether you’re using the phone to stream videos, play your favourite video games, or check your social media feeds. Meanwhile, the phone’s battery can last for 2-day though, but you’ve to moderate your operation to keep it going that long.

The 60W charging speed is very impressive for a mid-range phone and can power the phone from empty to full battery within 30 minutes, although the Xiaomi 12 Pro has more at 120W. However, some flagship phones like the latest Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra (45W) tails behind.

Realme 9 Pro Plus: Price in Nigeria and Availability

The Realme 9 Pro Plus is currently priced at ₦250,000 (roughly $427), thereby making it sit between the budget and mid-range segment.

The price is very impressive for a smartphone that has a flagship look, feels and runs like one. The closest competitors are the Xiaomi 12 Pro and Oppo Find X5 Pro which are a tiny bit pricier.

The Realme 9 Pro Plus was officially released on March 4 in the UK with the global release a few days after.
