The manufacturer’s design skill has been waxing stronger and it’s once again proven on the A96’s design.

The outer appearance of the Oppo A96 comprises of stylish dual photo module, slim bezels surrounding the screen, and an attractive range of colours. Upfront is a 6.59-inch AMOLED display that’s showing at FHD+ resolution. Apart from that, Oppo’s choice of technical features selection is quite amazing with the role of GPU given to Snapdragon 695 that’s assisted by an 8GB of RAM. The phone’s energy is made efficient by an excellent 5000mAh battery life that’ll comfortably last you for more than a day.

Design

The Oppo A96 has a unique design that distinguishes it from other phones. The curvature and disposition of the dual cameras gave it a flagship look and a design style that other phones will imitate.

The Oppo A96 has a slim design which makes it easy to handle comfortably with one hand. There’s a sparkling glass panel cased with a metallic frame to give you a smooth feel while holding it. This latest Oppo device features a length of 164.4 mm, 75.7mm in width, weighs just 191g. With these specs, the phone is quite average in weight and won’t be too heavy to handle. In fact, its curved design makes it sit comfortably on the hands.

Nevertheless, the dual rear camera bump that matches the colour on the back of this smartphone gave it an attractive look. The A96 power and volume rockers are split into the right and left corners of the phone respectively. When it comes to ports and connectivity, the SIM tray has a dual-nano SIM alongside an SDcard slot.

Unlike most recent phones, the Oppo A96 comes with a 3.5mm headphone jack which is a breakthrough for wired fans. You’re also getting a loud stereo speaker and USB-C port. The Oppo A96 has two excellent colour options of Starry Black and Sunset Blue.

Display

Display

The Oppo A96 has a 6.59-inch AMOLED screen with FHD+ (1080 × 2412 pixels) resolution. The phone’s display has a 90Hz refresh rate which Oppo claims will be switching between 60Hz to 90Hz automatically depending on what you’re doing with the phone. Other features of the A96 display are pretty amazing including the 600 nits maximum brightness, 16.7 million colour depth, 401ppi density, and 180Hz touch sampling rate.

The Oppo A96 display is interrupted by a small dot-hole cutout on the left that houses the selfie camera. Fortunately, the phone’s display is bright, vivid, and colourful which makes streaming movies a pleasure. Overall, the Oppo A96 display is a solid one but not compared to the Find X3 Pro or Xiaomi Redmi Note 11S that come with high refresh rate settings.

Dual Cameras

Camera

Oppo is fastly becoming one of the best phone camera brands and that can be proven on the Find X3 Pro, Reno 6 Pro, and now A96. The Oppo A96 comes with a dual-camera arrangement consisting of a 50MP primary shooter that’s assisted by a 2MP depth sensor. While the camera lens is too small compared to many modern phones, it’s still preferable to have many cameras that perform below expectations.

The A96 primary camera takes great photos with good natural colours and a nice dynamic range in a well-lighted environment. However, the same can’t be said in lowlight shots as images are filled with noise, but they’re somehow worthy of social media upload. Fortunately, there’s a Night mode that helps brighten up photos although not as perfect as many would wish.

Upfront is a 16MP selfie camera that takes pretty good looking photos. Also, the beauty filters applied by default makes it great and undeniably one of the best you can find at this price range. Videos are great too especially in daylight settings and you can shoot 1080p videos at 30 frames per second (fps).

Storage

Performance and Software

Powering the Oppo A96 is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 695 chipset that’s paired with 8GB of RAM to deliver snappy performance. While the phone doesn’t have the best processor in its category, it manages to surprise us by doing the most difficult tasks without any lag.

As for storage, you’re getting a single 256GB built-in storage variant. Fortunately, Oppo included an option to upgrade the available storage through SDcard. Gaming is quite okay, although the A96 will take a longer time to load when you throw in high graphic games like GTA, PES 2021, Asphalt 9, and others.

Unlike most 2022 phones, the Oppo A96 runs on last year’s Android 11 with ColourOS 11.1 interface. Oppo’s decision to integrate outdated software is quite unknown to us although you’ll be getting the latest Android 12’s update, it has already limited the total number of software updates the phone will be getting.

Oppo’s software has been outstanding over the years and the ColourOS 11.1 brings a lot of upgrades and improvements although it’s still nowhere close to stock Android. Meanwhile, there’s no noticeable lag with the Oppo software and we get cleaner icons, a beautiful interface, and a revamped quick toggles menu.

Battery

Battery Capacity

The 5000mAh battery on the A96 is a very good one and can comfortably last for 48 hours provided you didn’t stress the phone much. However, adding gaming, browsing, and social media to the mix with the refresh rate tuned to 90Hz, you’ll definitely struggle to get more than 24 hours of battery life.

The Oppo A96 comes with the new 33W SUPERVOOC fast charger which powers the phone from empty to full battery within an hour. Although it’s nothing compared to the Super VOOC found on most Oppo flagship smartphones, it’s still the best we’ve found in this price range.
