iOS 16: Expected Release Date
Apple follows the traditional schedule of announcing the next version of iOS in its annual WWDC event with this year’s own coming up between 6 – 10 June. This is usually followed by a beta version rollout to app developers before an official release of the operating system in September.
With that being said, we’ll be expecting the general release of the iOS 16 in September 2022, alongside the iPhone 14 models.
iOS 16: Supported iPhones
While Android phones have two to three years of major operating system updates, Apple is very good at keeping its smartphones up to date by rolling out the operating systems to them. The iPhone 6s for example despite being released in 2015 still received the iOS 15 update, whereas the Samsung Galaxy S6 released the same year didn’t receive Android 8 update.
However, with no verified news of whether there would be a major feature coming into iOS 16 that’ll require recent hardware, it’s too early to know which iPhones that won’t be getting the new OS. Furthermore, if it’s more demanding than the iOS 15, then some older iPhones won’t be eligible. An early leak suggests that the iOS 16 won’t be available on iPhone 6S, iPhone 6S Plus, and the original iPhone SE (2016). Although we’re still unsure of the specific iPhones that won’t be getting the new update, but it’s likely due to the hardware limitations of the camera and chip.

With the iOS 16 still coming a few months away, we’ve no clue what Apple has planned to bring to iPhones. However, there are some leaks with a rough idea suggesting what we’re likely to see on the new operating system.

Redesigned app icons
The macOS Monterey 12 comes with a whole range of new app icons and we’re likely to see the same changes on iOS 16. The Apple Maps and Weather app were among the few apps to get redesigned app icons in iOS 15, sources suggest we could have bigger changes on iOS 16.
However, no specifies on how the app icons would be provided, but iDropNews claims that it’ll have the design traits of the macOS 12. That could mean a revamped app icon design which will have more depth and texture than the overhauled look introduced in iOS 7. However, a reputable Apple leaker Mark Gurman revealed that he’s “not expecting an end-to-end redesign of iOS’s interface” in iOS 16, so we’re taking this with a pinch of salt.
Introduction of QuickNote
QuickNote was introduced to macOS Monterey and iPadOS 15 and we’re likely to see it on the iOS 16. It’s a feature that enables you to drag your finger from the bottom right corner of the device, and then type in some notes. Although iPhone already has many gestures, adding this one will be a great deal, especially for content creators. This will save you the strain of reaching for the Control Center on the top right and selecting the Notes icon.

Air apps
If you own an AirTag or AirPod, it’s quite stressful to manage this Apple device since you can only access the settings through Bluetooth which is quite cumbersome. While the AirTag settings can be accessed through the Find my app. However, being able to manage these devices through a single Air app will be easier and relieve a lot of confusion.
Updated Notification System
iPhone notifications have seen a lot of iterations in the past iOS updates and we might see new notification changes yet again. Furthermore, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman revealed that iOS 16 will see an updated notifications along with other features.
