A new entry-level handset – the Xiaomi Redmi 10A has been launched in the Nigerian market as the direct successor to the Redmi 9A. Several phone lovers choose entry-level phones either as their primary or secondary device because of how cheap they’re, which is the reason Xiaomi continues to unswervingly launch ultra-low-priced phones in the mid-range market.
Why low-end phones are known to offer mediocre performance with poor specs, that can’t be said for the new Redmi 10A. The Xiaomi Redmi 10A sports a mid-range MediaTek Helio G25 chipset with up to 3GB RAM to help boost performance. Other highlights of the phone features include a large 6.53-inch display, 13MP dual camera, and up to 5000mAh battery capacity.

Design and Display
At 194g, the Redmi 10A is a fairly light device which indicates good weight distribution. It has a similar rugged texture to the Redmi 10C counterpart which provides a good amount of grip. The matte finish line is disrupted by a square module that houses the rear camera and fingerprint reader.
Meanwhile, the bezels surrounding the phone’s screen are not slim compared to other Xiaomi devices, but it’s a normal thing for a phone of this price. Similar to the Redmi 10C, the phone has a teardrop notch that houses the selfie camera. The power and volume buttons are on the right side of the phone and their tactile feedback is spot on.
There’s a headphone jack, speaker grille, micro-USB port, and a small cutout for the microphone. However, Xiaomi’s gesture in integrating USB 2.0 ports in their low-end phones might be to help keep the price low even when the entire industry is migrating to USB-C. Meanwhile, on the top left side are the Dual-SIM card and SD card tray slots. Upon release, the phone is going to be available in triple colour options of Charcoal Black, Sea Blue, and Slate Grey. Overall, the Redmi 10A design is a bit balanced considering the price when compared to other phones.
The Xiaomi Redmi 10A has a large 6.53-inch HD+ (720 × 1600) resolution giving it 269 PPI density. The display is not excellent especially the poor colour accuracy, although you wouldn’t expect a phone of this price to have the best display quality.
Despite missing out on a high refresh rate and AMOLED screen, the Xiaomi MIUI interface has a tone of features to improve the LCD panel. There are night mode and night reading modes in the phone’s display settings that’ll make it more enticing.
However, if the display is one of your priorities when buying a smartphone, then it’s better to spend a bit more money and go for the Redmi 10C or the higher-end Redmi Note 11S.

Camera
The Redmi 10A has a dual 13MP rear camera sensor with a LED flash housed in the square camera module. The front panel is dominated by a 5MP lens which is the same thing as the Redmi 9A.
Pictures taken with the phone’s rear camera in daylight settings are decent with good details and colour reproduction. However, the dynamic range is not that good likewise the HDR as it takes time to process. Also, the phone lacks optical image stabilization (OIS) even though we didn’t expect to see it on a phone of this price. Fortunately, we found the selfie camera performance more appealing despite having a low 5MP sensor.
The Xiaomi Redmi 10A front and rear cameras can shoot 1080p videos at 30fps. The video quality tends to be great for social media clips and video calling. Overall, the Redmi 10A has a decent camera performance that befits its price, so it’s a win for Xiaomi fans.

Performance and Software
We’re a bit disappointed with Xiaomi as the Redmi 10C runs on the same MediaTek Helio G25 chipset just like last year’s Redmi 9C. This is an octa-core processor with 3GB RAM and Cortex A53 cores clocked up to 2.0GHz. There are dual 32GB and 64GB storage options which can be expandable via a microSD card.
Meanwhile, using the phone for calls, browsing, texting, or watching content will be swift without any lag, although some apps would take a longer time to open. However, when you start switching between multiple open web pages, some of them will refresh, although we expected that from an Helio G25 phone. High intensive games like Asphalt 9 or PUGB will only play on Lite versions at low settings. Even with that, the phone heats up after a few hours of gaming.
The Xiaomi Redmi 10A runs on MIUI 12.5 on top of Android 11. Every Xiaomi phone user will testify on oodles of customisation options available in the settings menu and the Redmi 10A didn’t miss out on that. Fortunately, the phone comes with all of Google’s Android 11 features including Dark Mode, Game Optimiser, Digital Wellbeing, etc. Meanwhile, a few bloatware apps are pre-installed which you can choose to uninstall if you wish to.

Xiaomi has a decent record of providing at least a year or two of Android software updates to her phones, so we expect the Redmi 10A to be among the phones to receive the Android 12 update.

Battery Capacity
One thing Xiaomi phones don’t lack is decent battery life. The Redmi 10A has a whopping 5000mAh battery onboard that’ll easily last for a day without connecting it to a charger. However, an average user will easily get a 2-day battery life with this device. Additionally, there’s Ultra Power mode that’ll stretch the battery life further which is helpful especially when the phone’s battery is low and there’s no power supply to charge it.
Xiaomi Redmi 10A: Price in Nigeria and Availability
The Redmi 10A is currently the 2022 most affordable smartphone from Xiaomi. It’s specifically meant for fans in developing countries like Nigeria, Pakistan, India, etc.
The Xiaomi Redmi 10A will be on sale in the Nigerian market for ₦58,000 (roughly $98) for the 2GB /32GB model, while the 3GB + 32GB version goes for ₦67,000 (about $114). However, the biggest model with 4GB of RAM and 128GB storage goes slightly higher at ₦78,000 ($133). This is a basic barebones smartphone designed to entice Xiaomi fans to enjoy the company’s amazing features without much compromise.
