Poco M5 Review: Features, Specs, and Price in Nigeria

Finally, the Poco M5 is set to be launched on September 05, 2022, just a few months after the release of the Poco M4 5G. 2022 is indeed a year of mid-range phones with many of them coming from Poco and its parent company Xiaomi.

The Poco M5 is an amazing device that’s powered by MediaTek Helio G99 SoC chipset and packs a 5000mAh battery capacity with incredible 33W fast charging support. Fortunately, it comes with Android 12 out of the box and sports the same 6.58-inch IPS display that’s found on the Poco M4 5G. Meanwhile, the Poco M5 features a side-mounted fingerprint sensor which is the current trending security bypass.

There’s no doubt the Poco M5 will end up becoming a top-rated mid-range phone, but it indeed comes with some criticisms especially when it comes to storage. However, when you look at its price, the M5 device might be worth consideration. Let’s take a deep analysis of the latest Poco M5 device to know whether it’s worth buying.

Poco M5: Design

Design

The Poco M5 has a unique scratch-resistant design with a slim body. This makes the M5 a perfect phone for rough users and those who don’t like using silicon cases on their phones.

However, just like the Poco M4 5G, there’s an outdated teardrop notch which we feel shouldn’t be seen on a 2022 smartphone.
Meanwhile, the Poco M5 has the signatory black rectangular bump that houses the triple camera lens. This is a feature that was debuted on the Poco M3, and fortunately, Poco retained it on the latest M5 device. There’s a side-mounted fingerprint scanner which also serves as the power button at the top right corner along with the volume buttons.

Furthermore, there’s a dedicated SDcard /SIM slot, USB-C port, and headphone jack for wired connection. The Poco M5 weighs slightly at 197g which is average for a mid-range phone and we’re excited to hold it in our hands without feeling anything. However, this phone is only limited to resisting splashes which means you have to handle it with care to avoid damage.

Display

Display

Upfront, the Poco M5 retains the 6.58-inch IPS display that’s on its predecessor, but with a 90Hz refresh rate and a corning Gorilla Glass 3 cover which is somehow below average. With the absence of an AMOLED screen, you’re stuck with an IPS LCD and 19.5:9 aspect ratio which isn’t bad at all.

The display is sharp and bright for indoor and outdoor usage. There’s a Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection which is not the highest grade, but quite manageable for a mid-range device. On the other hand, the display produces images with vibrant colours and is wide enough for watching thrilling movies.

Camera

Camera

We’re happy that the Poco M5 camera has been upgraded to 3 lenses at the back which is a slight upgrade to the 2 lens camera that’s on the Poco M4 5G. The addition of a 2MP macro sensor along with a 50MP primary shooter and another 2MP depth sensor made the Poco M5 a great camera device.

In low light conditions or night photographs, images aren’t detailed enough. However, even with the absence of an ultra-wide camera, the main camera still makes shooting in dynamic range possible with this phone. But this is not something you should be happy about.

Unfortunately, there are some issues while capturing in dynamic range. It doesn’t feel right to say the 2MP depth sensor is just for looks, but somehow it does. Skipping an ultra-wide sensor just for a 2MP depth sensor isn’t the best for this phone.

When it comes to the front camera, Poco retains the same 5MP selfie camera which is just okay for taking selfies as it doesn’t deliver the best results. You can as well record videos and make video calls with it. The overall performance of this phone’s camera still goes well with the price, despite the lack of 5G network connectivity.

Poco M5
Performance, Storage, and Software

Performance, Storage, and Software

The Poco M5 will be powered by the new MediaTek Helio G99 chipset which is a 2.2 GHz Octa Core Processor. This will be paired with a massive 6GB RAM to help boost productivity and help eliminate any form of lagging or slowing down while playing games.

The M5 is an ideal phone for game lovers and social media freaks who love having a speedy device. And if you choose to play some games, watch videos, or stream movies on Netflix, you’ll always experience a decent performance while using this phone. However, we’re not sure whether there’ll be a 5G variant, but we expect to see it in a few months.

When it comes to storage, you’re getting 6GB of RAM that’s paired with 64GB /128GB of UFS 2.2 internal storage. You can as well expand the storage through a microSD card slot up to 512GB.

The Poco M5 runs the latest Android 12 operating system that’s based on MIUI 13 interface. This will give it a direct qualification for the new Android 13 update alongside Xiaomi’s MIUI 14 interface, so expect to enjoy the best software features on this device.

Battery

The Poco M5 comes with a 5000mAh battery capacity which is among the highest in a Poco device. This makes it last more than a day on normal usage. However, you might need to connect the phone to a charger frequently if you play lots of games or stay online for hours.

Fortunately, there’s an upgraded 33W fast charging support that powers the phone from empty to full battery within one hour. This is a massive improvement over the Poco M4 5G which has the basic 18W fast charger.
