Xiaomi 12X Review: Features, Specs, and Price in Nigeria

Xiaomi has replaced their Mi branding with a brand new 12 series where you’ll find the company’s most premium phones like the Xiaomi 12, Xiaomi 12 Pro, Xiaomi 12X, and the Xiaomi 12 Lite. The four phones shares almost the same aesthetics but different hardware, especially after the release of the later model which has a 108MP rear camera while the others have 50MP.

Our main focus here is the Xiaomi 12X which is the cheapest option in the company’s flagship series of smartphones. In other words, it’s the smallest smartphone of the Xiaomi 12 series. Under the hood, you’ll find a Qualcomm Snapdragon 870 chipset which isn’t as strong as the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 Soc in the 12 Pro, though they have the same AMOLED display with 120Hz refresh rate.

Understandably, the whole Xiaomi 12 series has its area of specialities, but there seems to be none on the Xiaomi 12X. You only have an affordable flagship phone (depending on how you see the $602 price tag) with an outdated Android version and chipset. Nevertheless, this is the closest gateway to Xiaomi’s flagship series if you’re on a budget.

For those who are interested in phones which they can comfortably use, the Xiaomi 12X comes in a very handy form. Using the phone with one hand is easy, and you’ll find your fingers reaching the buttons that are placed across the edges. The phone weighs just 176g which is slightly less, provided the aluminium and Gorilla Glass Victus body which could seem bulky, but the phone doesn’t weigh that much.

Turning to the back, there’s a camera bump housing a triple camera setup. We noticed that the camera bump is slightly raised from the surface which makes the phone seem unsteady when kept on a table. Fortunately, there’s a provided clear case in the box that helps to keep the phone flat. The power /volume buttons are placed on the right edge, a SIM slot on the left, while a USB Type-C port and stereo speakers (both on the top and bottom) tuned by Harman Kardon are situated at the bottom.

The Xiaomi 12X comes in three distinct colors Gray, Blue, and Purple. The device is only protected against splash, so it’s not advisable to go swimming with the phone. The Xiaomi 12X isn’t much of a good-looking phone, but the build quality is what we can comfortably hold on to.

Display

Display

The Xiaomi 12X display features a 6.28-inch AMOLED screen with Full HD+ resolutions, HDR10, and Dolby Vision support for watching content that demands it. If you’re the type that frequently makes use of your phone outdoors, the Xiaomi 12X serves you well with its 1,100nits of peak brightness which is bright enough for visibility even under direct sunlight.

Down the screen, there’s an under-display fingerprint sensor that works rapidly quick while unlocking your phone. And there’s a 120Hz refresh rate that automatically switches between 120Hz and 60Hz, though you can manually do it yourself. The display of the Xiaomi 12X features everything you can expect from a flagship phone, but the 6.28-inch screen might feel small for those that like operating on a large screen.

Camera

Camera

The Xiaomi 12X is among the three models of the Xiaomi 12 series that have the same 50MP main camera. But Xiaomi later ended this similarity with the release of the 12 Lite which comes with a 108MP sensor. Now back to the Xiaomi 12X’s main camera which is supported by a 13MP ultra-wide shooter and a 5MP telemacro lens.

The main camera really did well with daytime photographs where photos look great and are well detailed, but colors aren’t too natural and photos often appear overexposed. So if you necessarily need to capture some well good-looking photos, the Xiaomi 12 Lite would be better. Meanwhile, night shots weren’t better in any way, even while shooting with the dedicated Night mode.

Recording videos on the Xiaomi 12X is the best you can get from a smartphone at this price point. Not only that you can record up to 8k videos, but you can also record 4k and 1080p videos with OIS (optical image stabilization). Also, selfies with the 32MP front camera look sharp and well-detailed.

Performance, Storage, and Software

The Xiaomi 12X is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 870 chipset which is equally a top-end chipset despite the Snapdragon 888 and Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chipsets already taking the limelight. Even at that, the Xiaomi 12X is still as powerful as you would expect from a flagship phone, but not to be compared with the other Xiaomi 12 models that have the later chipset. For performance, everything works perfectly on this phone including gaming, multitasking, and browsing websites.

As you would expect from a phone with a 120Hz refresh rate, scrolling through different apps on the screen will be fast and smooth. Plus an 8GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 128GB of UFS 3.1 storage which makes the phone faster with switching between multiple open apps. There’s also a higher 12GB of RAM with 256GB of internal storage, so you’ll get either of the two storage options depending on the model you choose.

The Xiaomi 12X runs the company’s latest MIUI 13 overlay with the Android 11 OS on top. From the MIUI 13 overlay, you will get lots of options to customize the UI to your liking. There’s a Theme app where you’ll find free wallpapers and icon styles. You can also uninstall some pre-installed apps if they aren’t useful to you. Moreover, Xiaomi has promised three years of Android updates and four security updates.

Battery

The Xiaomi 12X has a 4500mAh battery which can easily last the whole day on a single charge. This means you won’t have to charge the phone all the time, though there’s a 67W fast charger if you want to. The 12X 67W fast charger can power up the phone to 100% in just 30mins, and there’s an optimized charging feature that helps prolong the battery life to prevent ageing, and further learns from your daily charging habits.
