Oppo Reno 8 Pro 5G Review: Features, Specs, and Price in Nigeria

The Oppo Reno 8 Pro 5G is definitely the best choice for anyone interested in buying well-made smartphones without spending much on their top-tier counterparts. Though there’re still some capable alternatives out there in the market, the Reno 8 Pro 5G still impressed a lot of people with its reasonable price tag.

Meanwhile, Oppo is still aiming to push its rank to the top by releasing some of the best phones this year. Speaking of the flagship Oppo Find X5 Pro and the affordable Oppo Find X5 Lite. However, the Oppo Reno 8 Pro 5G is released to present more of the amazing features we saw on the Oppo Reno 7 Pro 5G of last year.

These changes are based on most of every smartphone to improve performance. For example, the screen on the Oppo Reno 8 Pro 5G has been upgraded to 6.7-inch with 120Hz refresh which is a great step up from the 6.55-inch and 90Hz screen on the model that came before it. Also, Oppo has changed the processor to a new MediaTek Dimensity 8100-MAX processor to boost the phone’s performance.

With all these upgrades, the Reno 8 Pro 5G is set to be an accomplished mobile phone for you, and everything you need to know about the phone is in this review. So if you want to get Oppo Reno 8 Pro 5G, here is some of the information you need to know about its design, display, camera, and performance.

Design

Design

Oppo started this telltale camera module that curves up from the body of the phone this year. Fortunately, this style has been making a good impression on the design of their phones including the Oppo Reno 8 Pro 5G. Amongst all Oppo phones we’ve reviewed, there’s always that design style we do call “sleek”, but none did it like that of the Reno 8 Pro 5G.

It’s a bit hard to differentiate this phone from the Apple iPhone until you notice the punch hole selfie cutout on the centre of the screen. There’s a volume rocker and a power button around the aluminium frame, but no 3.5mm headphone jack. The Oppo Reno 8 5G is not a large phone and it doesn’t weigh much, so it’s comfortable and easy to use.

If you’re the type that often drops your phone by any chance, you might find it hard to handle this phone’s glass back which is often slippery. Also, if you’re a fan of the glossy and reflective finish, then you’ll have to tolerate the fingerprint marks that get trapped on the back surface, but you can easily wipe them off.

Unfortunately, the protection against elements isn’t strong enough, so it can only withstand water drops and splashes but never attempt to drop the phone inside a body of water. Nevertheless, that’s one of the best designs we’ve seen so far, especially on aesthetics. And speaking of aesthetics, the Oppo Reno 8 Pro comes in two beautiful colourways of Glazed Black and Glazed Green.

Display

Display

What we love most about the phone’s display is the super-slim bezels that are hard to notice. Now, you have almost the whole space on the front panel to operate on the 6.7-inch screen that features an AMOLED display with a resolution of 2412 x 1080. Whether you’re streaming a movie or scrolling through your media feeds, you’ll always get a crystal clear view of every content displayed on the screen.

Both colour and brightness are on a moderate level, so the screen is very visible under direct sunlight. It feels great when there’s a high refresh rate for a smooth process while gaming and scrolling through the screen. However, the Oppo Reno 8 Pro 5G comes with 120Hz, so everything feels smooth and easy on the screen.

On the bottom of the screen, sits an under-display fingerprint scanner for unlocking your phone. Asides from that, you can also set up a pin, pattern, password, or facial recognition depending on the one you feel very comfortable using.

Camera

Camera

The Oppo Reno 8 Pro 5G has a triple camera setup on the rear consisting of a 50MP main shooter paired with a Sony IMX766 sensor, 8MP ultra-wide camera, and 2MP telephoto lens. On the front, it has a 32MP selfie camera that can also be used for video calls and recording videos.

We weren’t surprised when we noticed the presence of noise in the shots taken with the main camera, even the details produced are not enough. Nevertheless, the performance of the 50MP main camera is up to standards and you can use it to capture some decent shots and shoot videos at 4k and 1080p resolutions.

The absence of a telephoto lens hurts when you try to crop in with the X2 digital zoom because photos start to drop in quality and washed out as you get much closer. The ultra-wide camera is nowhere near the qualities of the main camera, but photos captured on it as well as the macro lens are just okay.

Performance, Storage, and Software

Amazingly, the Oppo Reno 8 Pro 5G is having the same benchmark results as some flagship phones. This shows how strong and efficient the MediaTek Dimensity 8100-Max has been. This chipset in combination with Mali-G610 MC6 GPU and 120Hz refresh rate is strong enough to handle most graphics-demanding games like Genshin Impact excellently.

Your day-to-day usage of the Reno 8 Pro 5G will be a smooth experience. You can launch numerous large Windows and apps, browse websites, play music, and watch movies without the system heating up.

There’s 8GB /12GB of RAM with 256GB of internal storage, but no option to expand the storage using a micro SD card slot. Also, the UFS 3.1 storage ensures that the Oppo Reno 8 Pro 5G opens apps and Windows quickly.

The Oppo Reno 8 Pro 5G is based on the Android 12 OS with the ColorOS 12.1 on top. While the ColorOS interface can’t be compared with Samsung’s One UI 5.0, it’s still one of the best interface and well-organized. Also, there aren’t many pre-installed apps that you might want to delete, so the interface is incredibly great.

Battery

If you’ve used any Oppo phone, you’ll know they don’t disappoint when it comes to battery life. The Oppo Reno 8 Pro 5G can last for two days on casual usage. This means that you won’t have to charge the phone often because the 4500mAh battery doesn’t drain quickly.

Fortunately, charging is done swiftly within one hour from empty to full battery, thanks to the 80W SUPERVOOC charger.
